I have recently read an interesting article on Joomla published by the Business Insider blog and I have re-published it below for your information and convenience,
?Joomla: A Powerful Alternative To WordPress and Focused on Security
by Ramon Ray & the Smallbiztechnology.com Team
Joomla is a web development platform, similar to WordPress. You install Joomla on your web host’s server and then your programmer (or you) can build web sites using the Joomla platform.
A few months ago I went to a local NYC Joomla Conference which was created to help the Joomla community of programmers and regular businesses get together to discuss web development in the context of Joomla. This stirred my interest in Jomla even more.
While many business owners do not pay attention to or focus on which web development platform is best for them, they should.
Joomla, Tumbler, WordPress, Blogger.com and many Do It Yourself (DIY) online services abound, making it easy for any business owner to have a great web site. However, there ARE differences in these platforms and it’s important to know at least a little about the technology choices they have. In consultation with a tech expert they can then make the choice that is best for them.
Sandra Ordonez, External Communications Lead for Joomla give us some input on small business and tech:
As someone who has consulted small business, I actually tell them that knowing about technology is a MUST in today’s market.
Why?
Because it affects its bottom line. The web platform you use is not only important because of your website, but its the foundation for any modern marketing plan, and can provide you with a variety of functionalities that can improve anything from internal workflow to ecommerce.
A recent client decided to go with a proprietary system, for a new venture. He spent thousands of dollars every month because the system didn’t offer him the flexibility he needed to launch marketing campaigns. When he realized that his SEO was being affected tremendously because of the limitations, he switched (6 months later, after having already collected hundreds of posts from over 30
writers). To make matter worst, since the proprietary system was not written in English, he had to spend more money and time switching to a different content management system (CMS).
In the end, in a 6 month time frame, he wasted over $80,000, time, and potential income since his seo in the first 6 months suffered tremendously.
In other words, its not JUST the techie small businesses should be worried about, but the platform is even more important because some don’t incorporate modern, up to par best practices.
Is Joomla “better” than WordPress or are both about the same?
We certainly think Joomla brings some unique elements to content management systems. We are excited about the great things that both WordPress and Joomla are doing for the open source communities, ultimately benefiting the end user. So we don’t like to make comparisons between the two.
What we can tell you is that Joomla is the only CMS that combines the ease of use and powerful extensibility necessary to meet the needs of a broad spectrum of users. In fact, its an ideal CMS for small businesses. Whereas others lack either ease of use or extensibility, Joomla takes the best of both worlds in one powerful and simple CMS. Another key differentiator for Joomla is the project’s
focus surrounding security, a priority set by the leadership team. Joomla developers are focused on, and excel at, protecting their users.
